IN THE FLASH BACK STORIES ON PAGE 2, UNDER PICTURE # 8, GARY BEVIN'S 1950 MERCURY OVERHEATED GOING OVER BENDER MOUNDS IN 1962 IN THE WALKOUT AT PARSONS HIGH SCHOOL.
#8 YOU PROBABLY REMEMBER THE FAMOUS WALKOUT AFTER WE WON THE REGIONAL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT. PARSONS HIGH SCHOOL MADE HEADLINES ON WHB KANSAS CITY RADIO, WHEN HALF THE HIGH SCHOOL WALKED OUT OF THE PEP ASSEMBLY AND WENT ON A WILD RIDE HONKING HORNS AND RUNNING STOP SIGNS THROUGH SOUTHEAST KANSAS INCLUDING PARSONS, ALTAMONT, COFFEVILLE, AND GOT STOPPED BY A POLICE ROAD BLOCK HEADING INTO INDEPENDENCE. AFTER WE GOT TO EACH TOWN,WE STOPPED & WENT CHARGING THROUGH THE HIGH SCHOOL. AT COFFEVILLE, DAVID AMOS WAS THE 2nd TO LAST PERSON OUT THE DOOR AHEAD OF ME. HE TURNED AROUND AND PUNCHED A COFFEVILLE STUDENT, THAT WAS PULLING ON HIS LETTER JACKET, RIGHT IN FRONT OF A TEACHER. ONE PARSONS TEACHER'S SON DROVE OFF WITHOUT PAYING FOR HIS GAS AT ALTAMONT. IN 1962 YOU COULD FILL UP THE TANK FOR ABOUT $5. HE WAS A RELATIVE OF JACKIE WALLACE, "HINT". EVERYONE'S OLD CLUNKERS KEPT BREAKING DOWN AND FALLING OUT OF THE RACE. GARY BEVINS' 1950 MERCURY THAT WE WERE IN OVERHEATED AND DIED COMING OVER BENDER MOUNDS ON THE WAY HOME. WE HAD TO WALK WAY OUT IN THIS FIELD AND CARRY WATER FROM A POND. THANKFULLY WE BROKE DOWN ABOUT 90 YEARS AFTER KATE BENDER WAS GONE.
