From Gordon: After graduating from Parsons High School, I attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and obtained a degree majoring in journalism. I also attended the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle campus and obtained a Masters in Social Work. I worked 31 years with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing as an investigator, supervisor, and District Administrator of offices in Oakland, Sacramento and San Francisco. I also served as an administrator for the Department serving as a Special Assistant to the Deputy Director, helping to develop mediation programs.
I also have served in the last 36 years as Chair of the Oakland Landscape Committee nonprofit, working on school and public gardens, park beautification and maintenance, tree planting and care, creek restoration, vegetation management projects to reduce fire risks, and mentoring and working with Probation Department high school students crews on greening projects in Oakland during the last 9 years.
My wife Sue is a retired public relations consultant and community leader, who most recently worked as the Media Director for the Mayor of Oakland. I have three children: daughter Joanna is an attorney with a civil rights law firm; daughter Tracy is an artist; son Michael is a Project Manager for a computer company.
I appreciate my Kansas roots and upbringing in Parsons. My father was a farmer/rancher and it helped me grow into my work/passion as an urban forester/gardener and not to be afraid of long hours and hard work. I look forward to attending the 100 year anniversary of our graduating class; time flies when you are having fun. Old gardeners never die, they just spade away.
