 1960 NJCAA BASKETBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONS, PJC coach Gene Schickel inducted into the Hall of Fame 10-11-17 DARYL ENGLAND CLASS OF 1962 & LEONARD KELLEY PHS 1959. LEONARD MADE THE 15 FOOT BASKET TO WIN THE 1960 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP FOR PARSONS JUNIOR COLLEGE 73-71 AGAINST TYLER TEXAS. THE NEXT SEASON HE LED PARSONS BACK TO THE NATIONAL TOURNAMENT, WHERE THEY LOST ON A GOALTENDING CALL AT THE FINAL BUZZER IN THE SEMI-FINALS. THEN LEONARD WAS STARTING GUARD FOR 2 MORE YEARS FOR WICHITA STATE. HE PLAYED A PRETTY MEAN SHORTSTOP & HIT LOTS OF HOME RUNS AS A BASEBALL PLAYER. This is Johnny Linden. I had the pleasure of visiting with Darrell England for an hour and a half at the 2017 PHS Golden Reunion. The conversation was mostly about basketball. You wouldn't meet a more polite, charming and entertaining person than Darrell. He was Highway Commissioner or something like that for the state of Oklahoma at one time. I loved to watch Darrell play basketball his senior year at PHS and at Parsons J C. Coach Leon Jursche piled some of us basketball players in his beautiful 1959 Pontiac and took us to the games at Chanute one winter night. Darrell was a senior and stole the show verbally sparing with the fans in between plays during the game. You can see Darrell on the sports page #3 at Parsons1964.com in pictures #s 17, 18, 20, & 28. We were having such a good time visiting that we were the last 2 people out the door at 11am at the sunday morning breakfast at the PHS cafeteria. When I was teaching school at Salina, Kansas my wife Sandy from Salina and I went down to Wichita to watch Lenoard play baseball and shortstop and got to see him hit a home run.
